So, how does everyone here read their ring codes?

Post by Digitoxin »

I tried using a flatbed scanner, but the resolution wasn't high enough (Only does 300 DPI).

My phone was a little better, but getting the right angle was difficult and there were too many reflections.

I ended up going with a 15x handheld magnifying glass with a built in light.

Jeweler's Loupe is what people tend to recommend. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078MX3RZB?th=1

I use a combination of the smartphone method from this forum post, which works well for 99% of discs I've tried it on so far, plus a cheap loupe with 30x/60x magnification that I picked up from Amazon. That helps to get some of the really tiny mould SID details that a camera won't capture.

I use a cheap, $1 magnifying glass.

And if you need very good optics, then this is either a microscope or a DSLR with a lens for macro photography.

I have been using the Carson MM-300 MicroBrite Plus (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LAX52IQ) for about two weeks now and can recommend it wholeheartedly.
It lets me easily read what my magnifying glass did not let me read before.
