any success with sata(mb)->pata(cd) converters?

serillel2, that came with my old mb, never quite worked...
5 years old now, it was one of first. anything changed?

1 year ago I had a rebugged ide plextox with a converter to plug it on sata. Converter was the best aruond, but when I tried to dump audio it froze and drive went dead until I shut down system and move it on another sata connector.

i've borrowed brother's USB adapter 'Gembird UAI001' and it seems to be working just fine.
i think i'll go for those.
